12 Things I Learned from My Husband's Unemployment

my journey Feb 19, 2019

Of course there is more, but here is what stands out to me right now:

My kids need me - During this season I've been gone 9-6 and I can tell that they need to see more of me. I'm grateful to be able to switch back roles from primary breadwinner to part time working my business. I knew what I was doing was for our family and the kids but it was interesting to see how quickly it began to wear on them and how much better it is for the little guys for me to work from home and be present.

I don't like being an employee anymore - Working so many hours for one client for the past month pulled on my brain toward an employee mindset. I was able to work and function as a consultant and provide value from an outside perspective, but I could still feel the pull back to my old employee mindset, even in the just the lack of urgency and time to find new clients. And while I enjoyed the work, I had that feeling that it was starting to pull me away from my path.

I love doing consulting - It's my...

Reflections on losing a job, and rewriting our story

my journey reflection Jan 09, 2019

Charles was let go due to downsizing last week. It was really unexpected and a lot to process over the weekend. But we're emerging with one dominant thought: this is our opportunity to rewrite our story.

He and I have had a theory for awhile that people have stories that they tell themselves about their life. These are usually created subconsciously as we grow up and experience the world. Every adult has a story they're living that was created based on their past experiences. And we believe it and live it out dutifully until something changes it. I believe anyone can choose to change their story and embrace the power of doing so to reinvent their life. It all starts with changing your thinking. What you think determines how you feel, and your thoughts and emotions create your inner reality, which you then produce as your external reality.

I read a book over the holidays by Dr. Caroline Leaf, called Who Switched Off My Brain? The title doesn't do justice to the book. In it she...

A Letter to a Blogger with a Mission

letters Jan 03, 2019

I'm dedicating this post to an incredible lady I met yesterday. You know who you are.

Dear friend,

I'm writing to encourage you to undertake the endeavor which you explained to me at length during our first meeting yesterday.

You have a beautiful vision, and a gift lying dormant inside of you. Do not let your age, or your health, or your schedule stop you.

Because people need your message. A message of hope, of joy, of personal triumph in the midst of pain.

I do not understand, and can never fully know, what your audience experiences day to day. But you can, you do. You know, you've been there. You've lived it and conquered it, and continue to in the midst of daily trials to take ownership of yourself, to exert your joy, to decide how you will look at life.

You see the light shining through the clouds, the flower in the rainstorm.

Thinking about how to encourage you makes me wish I was a poet. How do I describe the feeling I feel as I think about your mission and the effect that I...

Reflections on marketing formulas and when to buy online courses

marketing reflection Jan 02, 2019

Today I'm thinking about all the formulas that are out there being taught. And I want to help you change your approach and your perspective on them. These teachers tried a lot of things, and then something worked for them, and they became successful. Their success attracted attention and questions, and then they realized people would pay to learn how to be successful the same way they did.

It is a powerful and valid principle to study those who have accomplished what you want to accomplish, but I see too much of success being boiled down to specific formulas and then sold, and then people paying for the formula and then following it (or not) and perhaps having some initial success (or not).

What you need to know is that business success is about so much more than a specific marketing formula.

First, the formula itself may be valid but it needs to match you. What are your goals, your business model, your personality, your lifestyle requirements? Not every formula will work for you,...

Reflections on becoming a mompreneur, and plans to homeschool

Uncategorized Jan 01, 2019

I'm going to homeschool my kids this fall.

Sometimes you get to the point in life where you're just not willing to do things you don't feel good about anymore. That was me this past summer and so I quit my job.

And you know what? The world didn't end. It's been hard work, the emotional and mental work of switching to an entrepreneurial mindset, and especially of getting rid of limiting beliefs has been intense. But I've found I was able to do it, and I did. And it was nothing compared to the prospect of staying where I was.

And guess what I've found? When you start listening to your gut, and following your heart, and rejecting the notion that you have to listen to all the external 'coulds' and 'shoulds' and fears that keep you miserable and stuck - when you're just not willing anymore, and then you start carving your own path? That's addictive. I'm discovering my own power. And when you realize you can make decisions and design the life you want, that is a positive addiction of the...

5 Steps to Exploring Your Identity and Creativity in 2019

leadership Dec 17, 2018

Hey there,

What would you do if you let yourself blast off through all of your self imposed limitations? What would you dream about doing?

What current trends are you following that you need to let go of, so you can be more creatively and successfully YOU in 2019?

This is what I'm asking myself this morning as I'm meditating and journaling and trying to decide what to write to you all today.

I've been doing a lot of thinking about how to make a big change, how to become a different person, how to be who I've never been, how to do what I've never done. And how to coach my clients through this journey of personal and professional development as well.

I'm convinced a huge part of it is listening to the right voices, including largely your own.

Why is this so hard? I think we've been taught to distrust our own voice. We're told to listen to external rules and formulas, we've been tricked into believing this is the best route to success.

But I've decided it's time for you and I to...

8 Things I Wish Someone Would Have Told Me Last Year

leadership my journey Dec 07, 2018

I spent a year investing too much time, money and energy trying to figure out this whole online biz world, and then everything I had learned finally clicked, and I quit my job and replaced my income within 90 days.

In reflecting on everything I've learned through this experience, I came up with a list of things that I would tell a close friend right now if they asked me what I've learned that could help them.

What I hope to do here is share some wisdom to anyone who is where I was last year, or anyone who feels overwhelmed by all the options and pitches they see everywhere for courses and programs about marketing and online business. I'm telling you now because I wish someone would have been honest and told me these truths about online business a year ago.

I want to save you some time, give you some hope, and probably get some interesting conversations going.

Okay, here are 8 things I wish someone could have told me last year:

1. People who need to...

My Favorite Books I Read in 2018

books Dec 04, 2018

Ok, so this is just going to be a long list, including the books I'm currently working on. And it started as a list of my favorite books and became a list of all the books I read this year.

I want to challenge you to be intentional about finding some books that will help you grow in your thinking, and then find time every week to read and then to journal about what you're learning.

To highlight a few, I've bolded the ones that I think you should go buy right now.

When you get serious about becoming the person that your big dreams need you to be, finding the right next book to read will become your new favorite thing.

I used to be a big Black Friday shopper, but all I bought this year was Ego is the Enemy, because I want to navigate that tension between fear and pride and find that steady, confident service-oriented space in the middle; and the paper version of The Big Leap, to make it easier to do a series of Facebook live videos about it, because his concepts have changed my...

My New Course, Marketing Mindset, is Here!

marketing my journey Nov 26, 2018

This is the email I sent to my list today.

Hey there,

What are you working on this week?

I hope it's something big.

Do you have a project scheduled to make progress on this week, that will change your life when you finish it? I know some of you do.

Of my current coaching clients, one of them just finished creating her course, another is preparing to shoot videos for his course, another decided to prepare to launch a membership, and another is preparing to offer online fitness courses.

Taking on this kind of project takes a lot of courage. I know, because I just finished the initial version of my first full online course, Marketing Mindset.

I believe that every one of you has the potential to change your life in a few hours a week. And it takes two things to get there.

First, you've got to do the work to change the way you think. (Psst. This is what my new course will help you with)

You need to get really clear on why you do what you do, and clarify your mission. When you know what...

An Invitation to Work with Me

leadership my journey Nov 12, 2018

This is the letter I wrote to my newsletter list today.

Hey beautiful,

Have you ever felt yourself searching intently for your next step and then found that once you slowed down enough to just listen, it was right in front of you?

That's what I've been up to. Everything I shared a couple of weeks ago is still on my heart and in my plan. I will be starting a leadership book club sooner rather than later.

But right now it's time to go deep with a few of you.

I looked at where my life has led me and what I've learned along the way. And everything came together for me last week.

It all fell apart first because I almost launched the wrong thing.

But then I recognized the opportunity of this moment, and realized the right thing for us in this season, and that it will totally transform your life.

So I just found my full life mission, I lived through the turning point last week that  my entire life has been leading up to. And what came...
